[Dec. 15th, 2009|12:04 pm] |
I never met darkwolfie in person, but I've heard his name before from a more than a few of my east coast friends. From what I understood, he was the type of fur that you definitely wanted to drink with, talk to, and have as a friend.
Wolfie contracted the N1H1 virus not too long ago, ended up in the hospital, and died from complications. |

[EDIT]
FUCKING BULLSHIT! My dad's company is already ALREADY arguing AGAINST using their medical insurance policy to cover his injuries.
Why is the first scene of Michael Moore's "Sicko" playing out in my head?
[UPDATE]
Apparently it was only his left pinky finger. It is now an inch shorter. They couldn't save it. Five hours of paperwork and litigation, 20 minutes with the doctor, and a potential lawsuit against his company's medical insurance. c.c
At least the injury wasn't worse. |

| The invisible hand is flipping you off |
[Oct. 9th, 2009|10:40 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | cold | ] | So I'm half way though an economics class. It's SO MUCH more interesting and informative than anything else economomommomy-wise I've taken. So, it got me thinking about the invisible hand theory. Depending on how you look at it, it's either simply a mathematical function that naturally causes an equilibrium within supply and demand, or it's an impossible pipe-dream within human inspired markets.
Government intervention into the economy is not necessary, but to establish a society with fairer wages and less distance between the wealthy and impoverished, it's impossible without legal regulation. Putting a price floor on the price of labor (minimum wage), for example, causes an artificial surplus of laborers (unemployment) due to lack of demand (no jobs). However, the human side is that laborers can earn a living wage as opposed to the price of labor (wage) that the invisible hand would dictate. Unskilled labor jobs, for instance, do not have high demand, but there is a high supply. Without price floors, employees of unskilled labor jobs may be working for a few dollars an hour and would not be able to sustain a wage to escape being a statistic of poverty.
Without government intervention, what would happen is that big business and other social factors would intervene. In the mid 1800s to around 1920 (when the first anti-trust acts went into effect), the government had very little involvement in the markets. This would be fine and all, except that perfect competition does not exist. In order for the invisible hand theory to play out as many dream it to were government not involved, an environment for perfect competition must take place. This means that:
1. The equilibrium price of a good according to supply and demand must be accepted by both buyers and sellers alike. If a cup is worth $5, than sellers can't raise the price and buyers can't haggle for a lower price.
2. There are numerous competitors in the market. This means that monopolies and oligopolies cannot exist.
3. No barriers of entry for new businesses. Everyone can enter and exit into markets with the same degree of ease as all other businesses. Economies of scale, technical or intellectual property, popularity, social and legal status, ...they all must be balanced and fair.
4. Each firm must produce goods and services that are indistinguishable for each other. This means that no patents on physical or intellectual property can exist, and all businesses have the same access to goods and services to sell.
5. Clarity of information. All stakeholders (buyers, sellers, producers, competitors, government, etc...) must have access and understand everything there is to know about a company in the market.
6. Money is the main goal. There can be no goals other than to maximize profits. This means that environment, donations, culture, and other outside forces cannot even be considered as secondary goals.
All six conditions must be met for the invisible hand to work as most people would imagine if the government were not involved. As you can tell, this will NEVER happen. It is human nature to have ambition, secrets, pride, and status. Because of such humanistic traits, companies such as Standard Oil, Northern Securities Company, and the American Tobacco Company were allowed to manipulate the system in the government's place back in the 1800s. Upton Sinclair's The Jungle shone light on the labor and poverty issues created by the market manipulation of business.
Invisible hand? Never going to happen outside of a simple equilibrium function.
Err, is this post considered geeking-out or nerding-out? *laughs* I have no idea why I needed to get that out of my head. God. I miss having a life outside of school. |

| Garbage Awareness |
[Aug. 23rd, 2009|11:18 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | calm | ] | It's such a passive act, to throw away garbage. Does anyone actually pay attention to just how much they throw away in the course of a single day? 80% of American goods are designed for single time use, the average American throws away seven pounds of garbage per day, and the US creates 30% of the world's waste. Disappointing figures, really.
Galvin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco, signed in the toughest garbage and recycling laws in the US (going in effect in 2010). He hopes to eliminate garbage completely by 2020. While he draws a heap of criticism for being impossibly ambitious, at least he's attempting to do something that is desperately needed. You can't achieve the impossible if you believe it to be so.
...and I should be doing a report. c.c |

| | impressed | ] | There is a thunderstorm from HELL going on right now! I can't tell you how awesome it looks and sounds outside!
Coincidentally, I had lit a vanilla candle for a few seconds (not enough to make a lot of smoke, but just to get the vanilla smell out) as a huge bolt of lightning hit nearby with the most wicked pop and crackle I've ever heard. I had the window open, so it sounded amazing. My mom came into my room to make sure I wasn't on the computer (*snerk*) and she freaked out that she smelt a little bit of smoke. I mean, she freaked out! She thought the house was struck! XD
It's amazing outside right now. Rain and thunderstorm. The only thing better would be someone to enjoy it with. =D |

| E-mails to Legislators |
[Apr. 29th, 2009|02:06 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | cheerful | ] | So, I've been writing emails to different state officials. I assume they have my information already, and I'm not breaking any laws, so what the hell? Paranoia aside, I've been sending them emails.
The last batch were sent to New Hampshire legislators before they voted on HB 436, the new gay marriage bill:
================
Subject: Pro Gay Marriage
Senator John Gallus,
Many religions have many different beliefs about marriage. Personally, I believe that love is the ultimate gift from God and should be celebrated in all of it's forms. In some other Christian religions, a marriage is believed to be the union between a man and woman presided over by (a servant of) God. Since the United States has no official religion, it cannot deem either of the definitions of marriage right or wrong as each are relevant for their corresponding religions. Therefore, the US government cannot officially define a marriage without breaking the separation of church and state.
The US government, however, has given benefits to couples who can claim that they are married. In doing so, the government finds itself in the unfortunate position of defining a marriage. I believe that, while the privileges granted by the recognition of marriage are immeasurably beneficial to couples, the government never had a right in doing such a thing and calling it part of marriage. While I believe the solution is to completely separate the religious connotations towards the privileges provided to couples (the word "marriage") and treat it more like a business partnership, such a thing would call for a complete rehaul of the system and would probably will never happen.
The next best solution? Allow the rightful freedom of the people to decide individually what a marriage is. If two gay guys want to get married, fine. It's not the government's job to discriminate against them when their choice to make that commitment. Gay couples are then given equal rights to the benefits (and drawbacks) of a government recognized marriage. Let people choose their own religious beliefs on what a commitment to another human being means. It will not make the world explode, I promise.
Gays couples be able to marry to have hospital visitation and give the rights of authority to their partner if they choose. Gays couples should be able to make the legal decision to share their property if they choose. Gays couples should be able to share each others medical benefits and insurance if they choose. Gay couples should be able to adopt if they choose. Children of gay couples should be able to receive medical coverage from their gay parents. That is NOT right that they can't.
These are rights that are shared by other American citizens. By not allowing these rights to everyone, it is blatant discrimination. It does not redefine what a religion has to accept as a marriage, it just gives the same government benefits to those who already in their heart of hearts know they are a committed couple.
Call it a civil union? Great! Just make sure ALL of the benefits that are given to married couples are included, and not just a fraction of them. But, at that point, you might as well call it a marriage or let all marriages the be known as civil unions. Either one would suffice.
The oppression of love and commitment is never the right choice.
